Background of the study
This study appraises language planning strategies implemented for the development of the Hausa language in Kano, a region with a long history of linguistic richness and cultural significance. Language planning in Kano has been influenced by educational reforms, government policies, and community initiatives aimed at promoting linguistic unity and cultural preservation (Ibrahim, 2024). The strategies include curriculum development, teacher training, and media campaigns, all designed to enhance the usage and standardization of Hausa. The study delves into how these strategies are operationalized within educational institutions and the broader community, examining their impact on language proficiency and cultural identity. Additionally, it considers the influence of socio-political factors and economic resources on the success of language planning initiatives. Recent reforms have sought to integrate traditional knowledge with modern pedagogical practices to ensure that the Hausa language remains relevant in an increasingly globalized world (Ibrahim, 2024). By synthesizing theoretical insights with empirical research from policy analysis, classroom observations, and stakeholder interviews, the study provides a critical appraisal of existing strategies and identifies areas requiring improvement. It also highlights the importance of community involvement and continuous policy revision to address emerging challenges in language development (Nwankwo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Notwithstanding numerous language planning initiatives in Kano, the development of the Hausa language faces persistent challenges. There is a noticeable gap between policy intentions and practical implementation, resulting in inconsistent educational outcomes (Ibrahim, 2024). Disparities in resource allocation, teacher training, and curriculum execution have led to varying degrees of language proficiency among students. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological change and globalization has intensified competition with dominant languages, further complicating language development efforts. These challenges underscore the need for a comprehensive evaluation of current language planning strategies to ensure that they effectively address both traditional and contemporary educational demands (Nwankwo, 2023). This study, therefore, focuses on identifying the gaps and proposing actionable recommendations to enhance the sustainability of Hausa language development.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the current language planning strategies for Hausa development in Kano.
To identify challenges in policy implementation and resource allocation.
To recommend measures for enhancing Hausa language proficiency.
Research questions:
What language planning strategies are currently employed for Hausa development?
How effectively are these strategies implemented in Kano’s educational institutions?
What improvements are needed to bridge the gap between policy and practice?
Significance of the study
The study is significant in that it provides a critical appraisal of Hausa language planning strategies in Kano, offering insights into their effectiveness and areas for improvement. The findings will be instrumental for policymakers, educators, and community leaders aiming to promote linguistic heritage and enhance educational outcomes. By identifying key challenges and proposing targeted interventions, the research contributes to sustaining the cultural and linguistic legacy of the Hausa language (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
